- Tips on Using Large Rocks and Boulders in Landscaping
1. To create a waterfall effect, group together some rocks in a flowerbed. Use a water system by camouflaging the pipes beneath the rocks, allowing the water to flow naturally off the edges of the rocks. Make sure to create a higher rock base, built deeply into the soil to give it a more natural feel.
2. If you want to highlight a specific feature or plant, use the rocks and boulders to outline it. Create a perimeter using the rocks and plant the tree or your focal point of choice in the center of it. The rocks should be embedded four to six inches deep to keep it from moving and to give a solid foundation.
3. Pile the bigger rocks on top of each other, which will leave lots of space in the surface to create small flower pockets. Put mulched soil in them to allow plants to thrive, and when they begin to grow you will see how naturally they grow around the rocks. Dig the stones a few inches into the soil to give it a stable base as well as to provide the soil with air and ventilation.
4. Establish a great looking beam to your garden and add depth to it by piling large rocks and boulders on its surfaces. It will give you space to plant trees as well as bushes on the surfaces and top areas, and when they grow it can add height to your garden. Again, don’t forget to dig the larger rocks a few inches into the soil when taking on this project.
5. It’s easy to make a pond area in your garden simply by using the rocks for landscaping. Piling them high above will also allow you to have your own peaceful nook and waterfall that flows into a pond. Be sure that you use good water systems to prevent this area from clogging or overflowing. You can even plant many colorful flowers around the pond to give it a more magical or dreamy feel. If you know how to raise vines, training them to crawl above the waterfall will give it a lovely, jungle-like effect that will go nicely with the rocks for landscaping you just used.
